REMOTE COLLABORATION www.postmagazine.com 43 POST AUGUST 2016 ince 2013, NYC-based Nice Shoes and Dallas-based Republic Editorial have collaborated remotely, bringing together our complementary rosters of artists to service adver- tising clients in Dallas. The studios are connected via Nice Shoes' proprietary remote viewing technology, which brings together editors and agency clients at Republic with Nice Shoes colorists working out of studios in New York, Chicago and Minneapolis. We've teamed to deliver projects for McDonald's, Charter Communications, AT&T, Pizza Hut and Taco Bueno, and have found the relationship to be mutually benefi cial. Nice Shoes Remote Viewing is comprised of a display cali- brated to match exactly with the monitors at our studios, with a secure feed of the color session coming directly from FilmLight's Baselight. A secondary monitor equipped with Google Chromebox allows for face-to-face contact between everyone on the project, making two separate studios feel like one. Republic has access to our full roster of colorists, while we at Nice Shoes have gained entry to the Dallas advertising com- munity without the costs of building out a full suite and hiring a staff . The relationship, like many that we have established throughout North America, has benefi ted both studios and off ered convenience to their clients. "Teaming up with Nice Shoes has tremendously boosted our capabilities as an elite turn-key facility for post production," says Republic Editorial partner and senior editor Keith James. "They help keep the entire process seamless for both ourselves inter- nally and for our clients. Now we're able to handle everything in-house without compromising on the level of talent. It's given us the fl exibility during tight deadlines to multi-task if need be." One project for McDonald's allowed Keith, along with colorist Ron Sudul, to bring together a creative team spread out across three states, with an editor and director supervising Ron in New York, the agency team working with Keith in Dallas and a DP supervising the session via a live link on his laptop. The two have also collaborated between Chicago and Dallas since Ron established Nice Shoes' Chicago offi ce in late 2014. We've found that since the very beginning, our similar cul- tures at Nice Shoes and Republic have been an asset in estab- lishing and continuing a successful partnership. "We've been working with the guys from Nice Shoes for so long that they've grown to feel like an extension of our own staff ," says James. "All their colorists have a strong track record with us and really know how to run a session. It's a great feeling to know that our editors and their clients will always be able to plus their work with some of the best color in the game." I'm very proud of the work our team has done with Republic. The groundwork laid by our similar cultures has allowed for the expansion of our collaborations beyond color, with our Creative Studio team helping to support Republic's VFX team with crowd replacement for an AT&T spot and a few other projects. Their editors are extremely talented and we look to a future where they're cutting with us here in New York whenever the need arises. Working remotely has opened up so many possibilities for post studios to work together rather than outbid each other, and I feel that we're in great company with Republic and the rest of our trusted network of remote partners.
