Summer 2016 The Costume Designer 29 SmugMug Pros: Organizes photos, which can be uploaded from mobile devices and other apps. Allows users to upload unlimited photos and videos to their accounts. Galleries can be saved to devices for offline viewing. Cons: The web version is more stable and fully featured than the app, which lacks good photo-editing abilities. Who Uses It: CD Mandi Line of Pretty Little Liars, Shameless uses the mobile app for approvals, to ease photo assembly, and posting to social media. Dropbox Pros: Stores photos, documents, and videos in one place; can send large files to anyone, even if they don't have a Dropbox account. Cons: Storage in free account can get consumed quickly with many large files. Who Uses It: Costume Illustrator Phillip Boutté Jr. says, "It's a great way to share information quickly and efficiently. Also, great for storage and being able to recall projects quickly." Join.me Pros: Meeting-hosting app allows mobile audio and video conferencing, plus the ability to share screens and white- boards aid collaboration across crew. Cons: Pricey professional subscription. Who Uses It: Boutté, "The screen-sharing program … allows me to share my screen with designers no matter where they are." He worked with CD Ruth Carter using a combination of the telephone, join.me, and Skype. "I did an entire job with her without ever meeting with her in person." Scanner Pro Pros: The $3.99 app can scan documents and receipts on the go using your iPhone. Can turn physical documents into PDFs. Cons: Legibility isn't always great with some phone cam- eras; multiple-page scans can be clunky. Who Uses It: Boutté, "It helps when I am sending paper- work that needs to be scanned ... and when I am photo- graphing fabric to put in my illustrations." Marvelous Designer Pros: Software suite can create 3D virtual clothing, includ- ing realistic textures and details, guided by rules of patternmak- ing and sewing; requires no fashion design training. Cons: Isn't an app, but a suite of software and it can get pricey buying additional digital garment patterns. Who Uses It: Boutté, "It's digital patternmaking. I am learning this program but it is hands down best for creating garments to place on the digital figure." 7 0 3 - 5 1 7 - 7 3 7 3 w w w. a m a l g a m a t e d - c l o t h i n g . c o m a m a l g a m a t e d c l o t h i n g @ g m a i l . c o m @ a m a l g a m a t e d s h o p 5179 B Lee Highway, Arlington, VA 22207 "Specializing in men's and women's apparel from turn of the century to 1960"
