14 The Costume Designer Summer 2016 UNION LABEL The Emmy season has begun with the first round of voting closing June 27 and the nominees announced July 14. Congratulations to all of this year's nominees. The separation of Contemporary from Period/Fantasy was successful and that means: 1. Outstanding Costumes for Period/Fantasy entries will be recognized in two genres: Series and Limited Series or Movies. This year's nominees are Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Outlander, The People v. O.J. Simpson, and Roots. 2. Outstanding Costumes for Contemporary entries will be recognized in two genres: Series and Limited Series or Movies. This year's nominees are American Horror Story, Empire, The Good Wife, Grace and Frankie, and Transparent. 3. Outstanding Costumes for a Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Program is no longer a juried award and will be voted on this year by the membership, not a jury panel. Multiple winners are possible in this category. This year's nominees are Dancing With the Stars, Grease Live!, RuPaul's Drag Race, Saturday Night Live, and The Wiz Live! Statistically speaking, this means it's possible for more than one winner in each category, but only if everyone votes! Your vote really could make a difference so Sue Bub and I want to remind everyone to please vote in the online final round that begins August 15 and ends August 29. If you need assistance voting, please call the Academy and make an appointment during the voting period. The Academy number is (818) 754-2800. Due to the increase of formats and submissions, the Academy has created a second Creative Arts Awards night this year. The two Creative Arts Awards and Governors Ball will be September 10 and 11 and will be equal in every way. Sue and I, along with our Peer Group Executive Committee (PGEC), continue to work toward equitable solutions to these category divisions. We will be preparing a new campaign to present to the Academy governors for review and consideration. We welcome your constructive recommendations and observations. Recently, our Peer Group was invited and accepted the offer to vote in the Art Directors' Peer Group final round of voting. Our members can expect to see their nominees on the ballot as well this year. We hope you'll enjoy reviewing our fellow artists' work. In other Academy news, the new Academy Plaza/Saban Media Center and Wolf Theatre are now open and a cal- endar of events is being planned for our members. The new theater is beautiful with an amazing Dolby sound system once again screening monthly films. Academy members who've paid the Film Group membership fee will find the movie calendar on the Television Academy website. Reservations are mandatory and must also be made on the website. Remember to show your membership card when you go to the theater. If not already a member, we hope you'll consider joining the Television Academy and participate in our upcoming programs. If you're working in television, we need your voice. We're one of the Academy's smaller Peer Groups, so please join and help us be heard. Don't forget to vote! And we'll see you at the Saban Media Center! Sincerely, Terry Gordon Television Academy Governor tgordon@cdgia.com
