56 { THE SOMM JOURNAL } AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2016 { the rhône } by Karen Meymaker "If it had been less difficult for Jean-Luc Colombo to run a pharmacy in Cornas, we wouldn't have these wines," opines Martin Beally, Wine Director of the Wild Ginger in Seattle, and he probably isn't wrong. In the wine industry, there is a plethora of "sliding-door" moments wherein our favorite producers and properties came this close to not exist- ing. But we can't help but believe that no matter what the timeline dealt, Jean-Luc Colombo would have found himself making wine at some point in his life. And while Colombo did open a pharmacy with his wife, Anne, in 1982, it was the purchase of the vineyard Les Ruchets and the subsequent first bottling of this wine in 1987 that set him squarely on the path to make great changes in Cornas, the world of Syrah and the international wine market's perception of both.
