Blackman (1928–2016) Journeyman make-up art- ist Charles F. Blackman's storied make-up career spanned decades in Hollywood, having worked with Hollywood giants from Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor to Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep. Most impressive was his association with 10 US presidents, from Dwight D. Eisenhower to George W. Bush. He began as an usher for CBS on their radio shows while attending school. In 1952, he then moved onto Columbia Pictures, and worked for three years as an apprentice in the make-up department with Clay Campbell. In 1957, after his apprenticeship and having passed all of the examinations, Charlie Blackman became a full member of Local 706 and was placed in the Industry Experience Roster. A remarkable and popular artist, Charlie's résumé consisted of some of the most popular fi lms and biggest stars of the era including Ice Station Zebra (Rock Hudson, Ernest Borgnine); Planet of the Apes (Charlton Heston); Spartacus (Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis); Viva Las Vegas (Elvis Presley, Ann-Margret); The Misfi ts (Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe); The Facts of Life (Lucille Ball, Bob Hope); Giant (Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor); Picnic (Kim Novak, William Holden); Man on the Moon (Jim Carrey, Danny DeVito); One Good Cop (Michael Keaton, Rene Russo); Cape Fear (Robert DeNiro, Jessica Lange); For the Boys (Bette Midler); Bugsy (Warren Beatty, Annette Bening); Star Trek IV (William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy); Postcards From the Edge (Meryl Streep, Shirley MacLaine); Bonfi re of the Vanities (Tom Hanks, Melanie Griffi th). Blackman also worked extensively in commercials. Streep. Most impressive was his association with 10 US Monica Helpman (1933–2016) Monica immigrated to California in approximately 1960 from London, England, where she had been a hair stylist in fi lm and television. She began working at NBC and became a mem- ber of the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild in 1982. She achieved journeyman hair stylist status in 1987 and spent many years working primarily in episodic television series ranging from Dynasty, Moonlighting, Dallas, L.A. Law, Knots He traveled extensively during his association with the Rev. Billy Graham, allowing him the honor of meeting governors, mayors, religious leaders, politicians, musicians, and Queen Elizabeth II and her family. He was sent to the Summer White House in San Clemente, Calif., to make up President Nixon and his infamous dark beard which needed to be covered. Charlie fi rst made up President Reagan when he was doing General Electric Theater, and was sent to Arkansas to make up President Clinton for The Man From Hope, a fi lm presentation for the Democratic National Convention in New York (before his election). A remarkable artist on all levels, Charlie Blackman was also the Director of Men's Make-up for the Pageant of the Masters, consultant for Las Floristas Headdress Ball and was a judge for the journeyman make- up artist examinations. One of Charlie's beautiful oil seascapes was presented to Local 706 several years ago and is displayed proudly in the offi ces. Charlie married his muse and love of his life, Gloria, when she was an actress and dancer. She became a make- up artist and was one of the early women to become a Local 706 make-up artist in 1977. They worked together extensively until his retirement in 1993. Charlie and Gloria had four children: daughters Debra Friedman, Dayna Dixon and Dori Blackman-Anderson (also a 706 make-up artist), and son David Blackman. After a long battle with cancer, Charles Blackman passed away on March 7, 2016, and services were private. Landing, E.R., The Practice, and several seasons on Judging Amy and 24. She was nominated (along with Gerald Solomon and Cherie) for an Emmy in 1988 for the beautiful hair styling on Dynasty, and again nominated for a 2002 Make- Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Award for The Big Time (along with Marsha Lewis and Maggie Hayes-Jackson). Sister Helpman received her Gold Card in 2007 and kept working until her retirement in 2015. She is survived by two daughters, Kim Pagano and Melinda Duronslet.
