4 The Costume Designer Spring 2016
EDITOR'S NOTE
We are coming off a heady awards season, and our 18th
Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards provided some
unforgettable moments. There was an ebullient Ellen
Mirojnick who, through an amazing confluence of events,
celebrated both the Career Achievement and Excellence
in Period Television Awards by toasting champagne and
announcing, "This is the best night of my life." It was a thrill to honor her iconic work
and relevance in one breath.
Director Quentin Tarantino also captured our hearts. He confided, while accept-
ing our Distinguished Collaborator Award, that while he has never earned an Oscar
for the Costume Design of his films, he has always "won" Halloween because so many
fans choose to re-create his characters through clothing. For Tarantino, the conquest
of the audience is more important.
The legendary Sandy Powell presented an exquisite Cate Blanchett with this
year's LACOSTE Spotlight Award. The gesture had so much meaning because their
rapport and camaraderie was captivating. Also unforgettable was Jacqueline West at
the LACOSTE Symposium, responding to a query about the working conditions on
The Revenant. West said quietly of the sub-zero temperatures, "I was hoping it wasn't
the film which would be dedicated to me."
Perhaps what made the season most memorable was the exuberant mood. Our
sold-out show reaffirmed the current awareness of—and enthusiasm for—the art of
Costume Design. President Salvador Perez memorably said, "Some people like to say it
takes a village, I like to say it takes a costume department." It was a beautiful moment
of solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Local 705.
But spring beckons. In addition to complete awards coverage, we have a bonbon
from the show Outlander, created by our resident confectioner Terry Dresbach.
Don't be fooled by the visual feast she has created, every delicious detail is supported
by contemplation of the character and research.
We are also featuring the work of the extraordinary Ruth Carter, who has re-
envisioned the miniseries Roots with Diane Cilliers for History, A&E, and Lifetime.
In this issue, you can read about her unusual path to Costume Design and her recent
epic undertaking.
Dear readers, I can confide in all of you that Ruth is not only wondrous at work
and on the screen, she insisted on balancing on the uprooted tree roots for our cover
shoot while wearing platform shoes in order to create the right line. Ruth ascended
and descended gracefully, as if four-foot trains, teetering heels, and tree climbing
were commonplace.
Elegance aside, the way Ruth wants to tell a story that has a deeper meaning and
be a filmmaker with a conscience is inspiration we can all take to heart.
