In 1952, the SS
Pendleton, a 500-foot-
long T-2 oil tanker, was
literally broken in half
during a nor'easter
off the coast of Cape
Cod, and its surviving
crew of thirty-two were
subsequently rescued
by a 36-foot Coast
Guard boat, with a
rookie crew, in seas that
were churning 60-foot
waves. The Finest Hours
tells this true story, the
most celebrated small
boat rescue in US Coast
Guard history.
