products Dolby's new audio platform SAN FRANCISCO — Dolby introduced Atmos, a next- gen audio plat- form designed to deliver a more natural and real- istic sound field. The end-to-end solution brings together mixers, studios and distributors. The flexibility of object-based mix- ing provides total control over place- ment and move- ment of individual sounds or objects anywhere within a theater environ- ment. The platform works with the same tools that sound designers and mixers current- ly employ. Using descriptive meta- data about how the audio should be played back, Atmos generates legacy 5.1- and 7.1-chan- nel mixes automati- cally. Mixers can monitor and tweak these versions in realtime and switch between them to verify playback. Atmos can trans- mit up to 128 simul- taneous and loss- less audio inputs, and renders from 5.1 up to 64 discrete speaker feeds.
