Spring 2016 | WEAnews 12 Action WEA Legislative Community Colleges Pass Stable Funding Bill House Bill 80 (Community college budget request recalibration) passed with overwhelming support from both houses, as well as community college presidents and trustees. The Governor signed the bill in to law during the last day of the session, March 4. The WEA attended all the Community College Funding Task Force meetings during the 2015 interim, and worked alongside community colleges and legislators to help craft a bill that went through 19 drafts. This is a big win for community colleges across Wyoming, so they can now have a funding model that will provide sustainable and predictable funding for years to come. During the 2016 legislative session, the WEA fought hard to hold educational funding flat, but as a result of legislative action, our schools will experience drastic cuts in the coming biennium. The Joint Conference Committee (JCC) compromised with 1% cuts in the first year and an additional 1.4% the second year to the External Cost Adjustment (ECA) that districts received in 2015. This means a loss of approximately $36 million over the next two years. These cuts will hit districts with declining enrollment especially hard. The WEA will attend upcoming meetings and update members and the public as to the discussions around this and many other interim topics. Education to be Cut by Millions Over the Next Two Years!
