Winter 2016 The Costume Designer 45 Winter 2016 The Costume Designer 6 45 Why was purchasing a building for the CDG always part of your vision, and why was it so important to you? From a financial standpoint, I felt we had to stop paying rent and invest in ourselves. I also wanted us to have our own home that we didn't have to share with anyone else, that we could do with as we pleased, and have our own meeting space at our disposal. When did you decide this was the direction you wanted to take the CDG? As a Board member, I had tried for years to raise interest in buy- ing a building, but I didn't have the support of the Board. Part of my campaign promise to the members was to buy a building for the CDG. It was always part of my vision for the Guild, and one of the reasons that I ran for president is to see that vision move forward. But I'm only one person. I had to have a Board who agreed with that vision and the current Board of working Costume Designers understood the benefit of us owning a build- ing and we finally found a building we all loved. How did you know this was the right building for us? There had to be a trifecta. First—Location, location, location. The building is central to Burbank and within our price range. Also, the fact that it had so much parking was key for me because I want it to be easily accessible. In our current office, members rarely stop by because it is hard to find parking. I feel there is an apathy in that. If it is inconvenient, you won't stop by. Now, there is a lot of parking at our building and no reason not to stop by. What do you think this space will provide for us? I want our building to be more than an office. It is a meeting space, an exhibit space, and a classroom space. I want to have classes all the time. We can also have movie nights and watch screeners together as a group. I want us to have a place to have a cocktail party and I wanted to have as many reasons for us to get together as members and mingle. As Costume Designers, we are solitary people. We are the only Costume Designers on the projects. We don't have several Costume Designers who work with us and I think that we feed off of each other's energy. As a Board member, I see that when- ever we get together, we really like each other. It's always a great time. We enjoy each other's company, but we don't often have a chance or reasons to do that. Now we have a space that can accommodate a lot of us together, and it just adds to that element of community. I hope it will be our home away from home.
