Winter 2016 The Costume Designer 37 Excellence in Short Form Design Julie Vogel Most Interesting Man in the World Wins on Land, Sea & Air, Dos Equis Commercial The 1970s are such an iconic time period in this commercial. Bowling is a popular sport I enjoyed re-creating. We were challenged fitting modern-day extras into the vintage clothing due to the difference in body types and old thread holding the fabrics together. Working on this campaign for the past 10 years has given me and my creative crew the opportunity to travel to the '70s more than once ... from this California suburban bowling event of 1978, Harlem street fashion of 1976, a Brooklyn apartment fire circa 1971, and the Caltech conference "chicken or the egg" of 1974. It is always rewarding traveling back in time with the younger Most Interesting Man in the World. B. Åkerlund From the Makers of Happy & Merry, H&M Presents Katy Perry Commercial I love the Katy Perry fairy costume as it was a labor of love and one- of-a-kind with a special sense of magic to it. It was super fun collabo- rating together with the H&M team as the piece was hand-sewn, soldered, beaded, and set with approximately 58,620 Swarovski crystal stones and beads. Also, the floral design was plated in 22kt gold. The costume took an estimated 250 hours to complete and weighs approximately 4 kg (8.8 lbs). ACDs: Timothy Chernyaev, Eyob Johannes ILL: Manik Mercian Soyon An The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-Earth—Dance Battle, Video Game, Kaboom/Warner Interactive Commercial The most iconic costumes are the dwarfs in this commercial. There are five dwarfs all with very different personalities. They are from the same clan, so I made them of the same world, but I wanted to portray their individual character. There's the pack leader, the lover boy, the homely one, grandpa, and the one that doesn't care much about anything. The concept was if dwarfs were teleported to mod- ern day, I imagined them to look something like this. Johanna Argan Kevin Spacey, E-Trade Commercial Polished and classic is what E-Trade and I wanted to get across in this particular commercial spot "Opportunity Is Everywhere." We chose one suit and tie to be the iconic look for all three spots. A subtle grey-blue suit with a powder blue shirt and an olive green tie as a subtle reference to E-Trade green. Mindy Le Brock And So It Begins, Old Spice Commercial I think the most iconic costume from this spot is Around-the-World Terry Crews on a motorcycle. All of the costumes that Terry wears in this moment are iconic in their own right. By putting Terry in his signature red shorts right next to Terry as a Beefeater, Milkmaid, etc., we made Terry's red shorts as much of an icon as a Scotsman's kilt. Also seeing Terry's ripped body stuffed into those traditional stereotypes is jarring in a hilarious way, making them absurdly more memorable for the viewer. ACDs: Adrian Gilliland, Hunter Hamilton H&M Katy Perry/Liam Cushing, MIMITW/Dir. Tom Kuntz, And So It Begins/MJZ, Kevin Spacey/E-Trade, The Hobbit/Starr Hathaway
