Maxwell Wines 2014 Four Roads, Old Vine Grenache, McLaren Vale From family-owned Maxwell Wines from their 80-acre estate, this showcases a complex integration of earth, dried fruits, dark fruits, lavender and blueberries with medium-grained tannins on the very long finish. You want to continue drinking this to the last drop. 95 —Anthony Dias Blue, Editor-in-Chief CONTACT: Mark Maxwell, mark@maxwellwines.com.au Whistle Post 2012 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Coonawarra This Cab, like other Whistle Post wines, is produced from fruit grown in their 156-acre Smibert Vineyard, planted in 1987. This shows a perfect balance of dark fruits and mocha on the nose. It moves on to become a powerhouse of complex flavors of red, blue and black fruit and mouth-filling tannins. It tames to a pleasant, soft finish. 94 —Bill Brandel, CWE, VP/ Marketing CONTACT: Angus Smibert, angus@whistlepost.com.au Longview Vineyard 2013 "Yakka" Shiraz, Adelaide Hills, South Australia While this region is most known for its cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Longview Vineyard's owners, broth- ers Peter and Mark Saturno, believe the region is prime for high quality Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The proof is in the pudding with their "Yakka" Shiraz. Mineral and nuanced, with dense, elegant layers of candied raspberry, pencil lead and chalk this wine keeps on giving. Round, in all directions, with balanced acidity. Feminine and lithe to the end. 93 —Karen Moneymaker, Senior Editor CONTACT: Peter Saturno, peter@longviewsa.com.au AUSTRALIAN WINES AT THE TOP OF THEIR GAME photos by Dustin Downing W hen The Tasting Panel team was invited to taste through doz- ens of wines that received high scores from the experts in their own country, we took up space at The Rose café in Venice, California to document our experience.
