16 P E R S P E C T I V E | J A N UA RY / F E B R UA RY 2 0 1 6 NEW GUILD OFFICERS Nelson Coates has been elected President of the Art Directors Guild for a three-year term, succeeding Mimi Gramatky. Also elected for three-year terms are Patrick DeGreve as Vice President, Oana Bogdan as Treasurer and Thomas Wilkins as Secretary. Mr. Coates said, "I am thrilled to receive this mandate from my fellow ADG members. Our future strength lies in the unity of all our uniquely creative parts. I look forward to working with Pat, Oana and Tom and making our Guild stronger than ever." A member of the Guild since 1996, Nelson Coates has been designing features, television and commercials for more than 25 years. Known for such films as Flight, Runaway Jury and The Proposal, he has also designed miniseries such as Stephen King's The Stand (Emmy ® nomination) and the series October Road for ABC. His most recent work includes Hot Pursuit and Secret in Their Eyes. A member of the Television Academy ® and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ® , Mr. Coates is one of the few members to begin his entertainment career as a professional actor. A frequent lecturer, guest mentor and panelist at numerous colleges, universities and film festivals, Nelson actively works to educate future designers and filmmakers throughout the US and internationally. Scenic Artist Pat DeGreve studied fine arts and drama in high school and was a fine arts major in college. A professor told him the best way to get ahead was to volunteer and that's just what he did. He worked at the Masquers Club, doing everything there was to do in theater productions, from acting to painting. One of the people working there was set decorator Don Remacle, then a lead Scenic Artist at CBS, who got Patrick an interview at Television City. Beginning his career there on The Carol Burnett Show and The Sonny and Cher Show, he is still with CBS thirty-five years later, now as the Charge Scenic Artist supervising the Scenic, Paint and Graphic Departments. Production Designer Oana Bogdan has contributed to television series including Dark Blue, The Ex List and Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight. She has also designed several short film projects and public service announcements. The Romanian-born Ms. Bogdan has also worked as a producer and Art Director of creature and special effects on films such as Underworld 1 & 2, Sky High, I, Robot, Stuart Little and Godzilla. As an Art Director, she has contributed to Hawaii 5-0, Four Christmases, Criminal Minds, Cold Case, 24, Vanilla Sky and Linkin Park music videos. Tom Wilkins is a Production Designer and Art Director with over twenty years of experience in film, television and commercials. Starting in live entertainment as a theater designer and theme park Art Director, he transitioned to film as a Set Designer on Kathryn Bigelow's first film, Near Dark, working with Production Designer Stephen Altman.
