59 SAG -AF TR A | Special Issue 2016 | SAGAFTRA.org nominations. At its peak, the show averaged 30 million viewers per week. Burnett was beloved for her iconic character roles: skits featuring Starlet O'Hara, the Charwoman and Nora Desmond were fan favorites. One character, Eunice, would go on to launch a TV movie, Eunice, and a spinoff series, Mama's Family. Although she's best known for her work on the small screen, Burnett is a versatile film and stage actress as well, having appeared in several films, including 1982's Annie, which she starred in alongside Tim Curry and Bernadette Peters. She would also return to her Broadway roots in 1995, starring in Moon Over Buffalo and netting a second Tony nomination in the process. As dedicated as she is to making people laugh, Burnett is also a passionate philanthropist. She founded the Carrie Hamilton Foundation in honor of her late daughter and has endowed several scholarships, including the Carol Burnett Award for Responsible Journalism at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. She also supports the work of the Hereditary Disease Foundation. As both a performer and a philanthropist, Burnett embodies the very spirit of a life achievement honoree. Comedian Tim Conway, who met Burnett during a guest stint on The Garry Moore Show and would go on to star on The Carol Burnett Show, described her in his 2013 book What's So Funny? My Hilarious Life. "The truth is Carol Burnett is even better than the myth surrounding her … Let's put it this way, there's no more talented entertainer in the world and there isn't a better friend in the universe than my dear, dear Carol." 1 SAG-AFTR A SPECIAL COLLECTIONS
