Winter 2015 | WEAnews 22 Member Benefits Public high schools across the na on can score up to $3,000 for their sports departments with a California Casualty Thomas R. Brown Athle cs Grant. California Casualty, provider of the NEA® Auto & Home Insurance Program, is providing $100,000 to offset budget cuts that have affected high school athletics. The grant is named a er California Casualty Chairman Emeritus Tom Brown, who believes that lessons taught on the playing field – teamwork, confidence and sportsmanship – help develop students who are successful in the classroom and later in life. This past year, 87 high schools in 29 states received grants totaling $100,200. Since its incep on, more than $400,000 has been awarded to hundreds of public high schools across the U.S. that have used the funds to purchase safer football helmets, update ta ered and torn uniforms or replace deteriorated wrestling and gymnas cs mats. Applicants must be a current member (or referred by a member) of the Na onal Educa on Associa on (NEA) or one of the NEA state affiliates, or one of our other par cipa ng educator associa ons including ACSA, CASE, COSA, KASA, NASA, UASSP, as well as be an ac ve employee of the public high school for which funding is sought. Schools in AK, HI, MA, MI, NY and WI are not eligible. Award recipients will be notified in April 2016, with presentations in May 2016.
