44 he thickened by tediously adding strands of yarn all over. The Bog Monster's head was attached by a bracket to a helmet that the actor wore, giving the suit the look of puppeteered expression. The end result was one of the crew's favorite monsters, affectionately dubbed "Boggy" on set. We were also able to create the fol- lowing: Snake Lady, the Evil Clown, two Vampires, the Witch Doctor, Madam Doom, the Executioner, the Pirate, two Creeps, two 10-foot-tall Scarecrows and a Jack O'Lantern on stilts, and the creepy little haunted mask. Our build phase overlapped with filming while they shot the scenes with the main cast, including Jack Black as R.L. Stine, Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush and Ryan Lee. One challenge we faced was when production added a scene last minute wherein several characters become frozen. It was Steve Prouty's genius that came up with a way to hang icicles from the jaw line. Rose Locke took the initiative to find and fly in a troupe of mimes from Florida. I remember hearing comments about how still the extras were being. It was impressive and unexpected for anyone who didn't know they were all mime artists. We ended up with 12 individual frozen looks that were topped with incredible wigs that looks stiff, snowy and dripping with icicles. Adruitha Lee, our Oscar ® -winning department head hair, says it took a lot of experimentation to get to a look that worked so well. "It was a challenge to find the right materials to make hair look actually frozen. I called around to other hair colleagues asking for their secret recipes, but nothing seemed to be working for our needs. Then we got the idea that saved the day, and we went to Home Depot and we bought 20 tubes of caulking in white and clear, and started painting the wigs with them. It was an experi- ment … and fortunately, it worked." Her department created 14 frozen wigs for the scene. Along with the main cast were our 27 featured extras. They were originally scheduled to work for only 16 days at the end of the filming schedule, but because the production team was so pleased with their looks, our monsters ended up working more than 30 days. To accommodate when the schedule changed and the scenes with the monsters were pushed forward, we were met with the challenge of traveling in artists at the drop of the hat for a day or two of work at a time with less than a week's notice. We are so grateful to have had the help of eight Local 706 artists, some of whom came without notice. I would like to recognize and thank all of them for their hard work: Philly Temple, Kim Perrodin, Will Steve Prouty applying a make-up test.
