H E A LT H L I N KS 1 2 | PULSE W i n t e r 2 0 1 5 THE REASON IS YOU T he doctor-patient relationship is vital to successful medical treatment, yet many other employees also contribute to quality care. at's why Torrance Memorial Medical Center created "e Reason Is You Award" for employees providing extraordinary service. e award is meant to honor those who have demonstrated excellence through their compassionate communication, behavior or teamwork. Here are some recent award recipients and their nominating stories. (e identities of the nominators are kept anonymous. Physicians and employees can nominate each other. Patients can also nominate physicians and employees.) ANA CHAVEZ, Environmental Services, Labor & Delivery "In our unit, we have a large volume of patients who are coming in either for labor checks or deliveries. We average approximately 20 patients per day—and this is no exaggeration—so our turn- around rate is very high. Despite her high quantity of work, Ana Chavez al- ways comes to work with a smile on her face, meets each of the staff with a hello, and is always ready to work. I have never seen someone take so much pride in her work, including making sure every room is clean, right down to every nook and cranny, and ready to present to the patient. It is important that when a patient comes into our unit to deliver, the environment meets expectations in cleanliness. Ana never complains or has a negative attitude about her workload, even when she works alone without as- sistance, which is most of the time. She greets every request with a smile, nod, and a, 'Yes, no problem!' Ana is valued by everyone in the unit, including the staff, nurses and doctors. For all of these reasons, I think it is imperative that Ana be recognized as the wonderful as- set she is to our labor and delivery unit. As a result, I would like to nominate her for 'e Reason Is You' recogni- tion. She improves the quality of our unit and is extremely deserving of this recognition." CATHY FULLERTON, Physical Therapist, Home Health & Hospice "Cathy Fullerton is absolutely fantastic not only because she is a pro at physical therapy, but also because she is a real problem solver for her patients. Cathy goes the extra mile to meet her patients' needs and to provide the best possible circumstances for their recovery while they are in her care. Cathy saw that I needed a bath-transfer bench for my safety in the shower. I live alone and had no one to get the bench for me. Cathy promptly went to the store and bought one. She also assembled it. I told her I couldn't use my dishwasher because the walker got in the way. I needed soap to wash my dishes in the sink. Cathy bought some for me.
