RITTWAGE President / CEO TV TIME BEYOND THE BOOK or those of you, like myself, who are truly in love with the media and en- tertainment industry, fall is an exciting time of year. It's when the Television Academy hands out its Emmys to some of the most deserving creatives in Hollywood, who are putting out some remarkable content for viewers. On Sep- tember 20th, the Academy recognized Olive Kitteridge on all fronts, including "Outstanding Limited Series." Also, the never-to-be-ignored Game of Thrones stacked up a whopping 12 awards, including "Outstanding Drama Series." See more Emmy coverage on page 4. Aside from awards celebrating television, it's also a time when the new TV season is in full swing, with networks rolling out brand new shows and returning favorites. This month, Post writer Christine Bunish takes a look at some of the new series mak- ing their broadcast debut, including NBC's highly-publicized Blindspot, ABC's Quan- tico, and CBS' highly anticipated Supergirl (as well as others), in our "Fall TV Report" on page 22. As always, Post will continue its TV coverage throughout the year in our reoccurring "Primetime" column. On the big screen, we're also seeing the release of some potential box office heavy hitters and possible Oscar contend- ers. Columnist Iain Blair takes a look at the VFX-heavy Pan ("Director's Chair," page 14), speaking with director Joe Wright. I also had the opportunity to speak with VFX supervisor on Ridley Scott's The Martian, MPC's Richard Stammers (see page 18), who told me how Scott wanted to ensure that the Martian landscapes would have "something beautiful about it. It's not only a terrifying planet, but subtlety beautiful." Look for my interview with the film's editor, Pietro Scalia, online. Post's Jennifer Walden delves into "Audio for Film" on page 32, where she looks at Crimson Peak, Hotel Transylvania, Pan and more. Continuing with Post's Special Sections, we put the spotlight on Virtual Reality this month (page 37). The technology is really taking hold, so we have reports from SIGGRAPH, Jon Peddie Research (which held a discussion on the topic at this year's SIGGRAPH), and section sponsors Assim- ilate, AMD and Boxx. It will be interesting to see how the technology develops in the months to come. his space has a new name and new focus. "The Online" is a term post pros will be familiar with, as it describes the stage where a project ultimately comes to- gether, resulting in its finished form. In this case, we're using the term to take readers beyond Post — the magazine — and into our online world, where you'll find content beyond that appearing here in print. I'm very excited to be heading up this ef- fort, having spent more than 20 years work- ing on the print edition, while also helping to build our Web presence. I'll still be actively involved in the magazine. In fact, you can look out for my report on the new Peanuts movie in these pages next month. In the meantime, I invite you to visit post- magazine.com, where you can read about — and view — projects that include music videos, Web series, VFX sequences, show opens, trailers, and the like. I had a chance to talk with the editor and sound designer that recently completed work on metal band Slayer's new Repentless video, which hit a million views in less than a week when it debuted in September. Using a single cam- era, the team put together what amounts to a full-scale prison riot. It's over the top and definitely pushes the limits of what a broadcaster would allow, but that's one of the benefits of using the Internet to reach an audience. You can view it on our site. I also caught up with Elisabeth Ness, who created, stars in, and edited a new Web series titled Redheads Anonymous. The series' five episodes range from five to eight minutes — another benefit of the Internet, non-traditional lengths. Ness says the script ultimately determined how long each of the crowd-funded episodes would run. And now with opportunities for sponsorships from skin- and hair-care product manufacturers, Ness is hoping to create a Season 2. Another online highlight is a 10-episode Podcast series created by the Dolby Insti- tute and SoundWorks Collection. Episodes run approximately 30 minutes and offer insight from mixers, sound designers and audio editors into the work they do for film, television and games. There's a lot to call at- tention to online, so definitely visit the "Web Exclusives" section on Post's homepage. Post Magazine is published by Post, LLC, a COP communications company.
