In So Many Words. • "Daylight" refers to the space between the rim of a glass and the surface of the liquid. • On October 23, 1805, Nicole-Barbe became the widow ("veuve") Clicquot and took over wine production of her husband's estate, so the property was renamed Veuve Clicquot. • During Prohibition, California acreage planted to vines actually increased to satisfy the demand for grapes among home winemakers. Did You Know? Fit for a Gentleman T he Gentleman's Collection, a new wine brand released last month, pays homage to Dr. Henry Lindeman, who founded his winery 172 years ago. The Gentleman's Collection encom- passes two top selling varieties that appeal to the Millennial (gentle)men: a Cabernet Sauvignon (SRP $16.99) and a Red Blend (SRP $16.99). These wines are made from California grapes and sourced from trusted regions such as Sonoma County. Sandra LeDrew, President, Treasury Wine Estates, North America states, "We believe the Gentleman's Collection speaks to the Millennial male and has enormous shelf appeal. The packaging is innovative, authentic and has great history that resonates with customers." The Mad Crush I f you've ever wondered what it might be like to truly work a harvest season in wine country, Sean Christopher Weir's memoir The Mad Crush (Mooncatcher Media, $11.95) will leave you either exalted and eager to have your own experi- ence, or comfortable leaving the work to others. Weir recounts in fervent detail the 1995 crush he worked at Saucelito Canyon with Bill Greenough, harvesting Zinfandel vines that date back to 1880. Weir deftly paints a dra- matic, almost agonizing portrait of life on Greenough's secluded ranch in San Luis Obispo where as far as the eye could see there "was no evidence of mankind." Through the interactions of an intriguing cast of characters, the immensely difficult, yet earnest and rewarding work of crush comes vividly alive. —Jonathan Cristaldi A Fresh Look C hivas Regal has unveiled a contemporary new design for its 12 Year Old expression that rein- forces the craftsmanship, luxury and heritage of this Scotch whisky. The new Chivas Regal 12 Year Old bottle retains its round generous shape for which it is renowned, while its shoulders have been raised higher. The brand signifier is now included as a more prominent, organic feature of the bottle, and the signatures of founders James and John Chivas have been added to the glass. Select areas of the label have been embossed and debossed to add a texturalized element to the packaging.
