AEA Advocate | Fall 2015 11 AROuNd AEA AROuNd AEA AROuNd AEA Local Associations Welcome New Employees Despite the statewide teacher shortage, Arizona public school districts hired hundreds of new teachers this year. Many local associations hosted luncheons or breakfasts to welcome new staff hired and introduce them to Association membership. Local association leaders spoke about the how members work together through collective action to improve student learning conditions and employee working conditions. They highlighted committee member involvement, contract negotiation victories, salary increases, professional development opportunities, and examples of advocacy to protect employees' rights. AEA and NEA member benefi t vendors presented information about ways membership could save money on insurance and fi nancial services. several local associations gave away cash and prizes to new employees who fi lled out information cards or signed up for membership at these events and AEA will hold a statewide drawing to give away eight $250 gift cards on september 30 for all new members who joined at the beginning of the school year. Winners will be contacted following the drawing.
