september 2015  /  the tasting panel  /  137 "Spirited Republic" is presented in part by the National Archives Foundation through the generous support of HISTORY, the Lawrence F. O'Brien Family, THE TASTING PANEL Magazine and Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America. Additional exhibition funding provided by the Beer Institute, the Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S., the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association and the National Beer Wholesalers Association. American as Apple Pie Tealye Long, Business Development Manager for Chufly Imports, competed in the second heat with her Dorothy Parker American Gin– inspired cocktail, American as Apple Pie. Long's goal was to introduce a fun cocktail for the Fourth of July that was "sweet as apple pie." Brooklyn-based New York Distilling Company built one of the nation's premiere craft distilleries, and one of the first in New York, since the industry went dark after Prohibition. In a similarly trail-blazing way, Dorothy Parker was an unconven- tional woman and gin aficionado; how fitting that this blend of tradi- tional and contemporary botanicals, including juniper and elderberries, citrus, cinnamon, and hibiscus, pairs well with the spiced apple syrup Long used to evoke memories of mom's apple pie in cocktail form. A Melting Pot Rounding out the competition in the second heat was Silo bartender Will Mullady with his Darnley's View Gin– based The District Shaw. Darnley's View is a boutique, hand-crafted gin made with six carefully selected botanicals: juniper, lemon peel, coriander seed, angelica root, orris root and elderflower. Botanicals are redistilled with a four- times-distilled neutral grain spirits in a pot still. Only purified water is added to the London dry gin to bring the spirit to its bottling strength. "Just as Darnley's View gin is a blend of many things, so is America, where you have access to different people, cultures and experiences," Mullady says. "So this is a cocktail that represents the melting pot of America." Silo bartender Will Mullady.
