25 SUMMER 2015 / CINEMONTAGE talking to you about what he's doing technically. AH: With Oren, we do a lot of talking beforehand. Everybody's bringing ideas to the table during the writing stages and pre-production. I'm an editor, that's my role — but I've never considered myself to be only that. It's all filmmaking, all part of the telling of a story. I'll assemble while he's shooting and try to kick stuff to him that will stimulate him and get him excited. I can say, "We can really go this far with this," or, "Conceptually, this is really interesting; maybe we should try more of it." It's a conversation from the very beginning and one that goes all the way through to the mix and color correction. CM: The decision not to cut can be the most important of all. With Time Out of Mind, a cut is huge because you could argue that any one shot could cut at any point; there's a feeling of arbitrariness. But, of course, the decision isn't arbitrary at all. OM: Within the context of how the movie was shot, it gives you the feeling of an arbitrary life. And that's the point. >>> This is a bittersweet moment for me. I had a good run and am glad I was a part of the Warner Brothers family. Now it is time for me to move on. There are many to thank and below are a few in particular. First and foremost, Kim Waugh, who has turned the post production sound department into a world class facility. Norman Barnett who worked with me to continue my career in a meaningful way, and as a result, I will have been here almost 23 years. Damon Banks who is an asset in his managerial position. Connie Kazmer for always wanting to keep communication easy and effective. Shannon Rutecki who embodies someone who is indefatigable and keeps smiling. Without the talents of Kevin Collier, Scott Young and all of the rest of the Tech crew, we would be lost in a sea of bits and bytes unable to see the shore. Shout outs in no particular order to Pam in Gardening, Jimmy in Electrical, Bresida, Harry in the Commissary, Kathleen Harper, Carolynn Tapp, Scott Morgan, Kim Morrell, Kevin Delany, Engle Meridith, Bob Beresh, Kyle Rochlin, Shelley Roden, David Fein and last but not least, Don Rodgers. And to balance everything out, I won't miss my Seinfeld moment of "The Celery Incident" !!! Special goodbyes to MaryJo Lang, one of the best foley mixers ever ( it has been a long road since TAJ! ) and my foley partner, Alyson Moore who is simply the best. I am excited to start a new chapter in my foley career and looking forward to meeting the challenges with my new Skywalker family. To quote Mark Twain, "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. "Discover." John Roesch Opposite, Alex Hall. Right, Oren Moverman.
