july 2015  /  the tasting panel  /  51 COMPETITIONS MIXOLOGISTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY CRAFT WINNING COCKTAILS THAT ARE ALL ABOUT THAT BASE (SPIRIT) by Becky Tsadik and Jesse Hom-Dawson / photos by Dustin Downing T he third annual Broker's Bowler Cup Competition, presented by Broker's London Dry Gin and THE TASTING PANEL, kicked off this year with bartenders from around the country throwing their hat into the ring for a chance to win a trip to Tales of the Cocktail and be named Broker's Bowler Cup Champion. Thousands of voters used the power of social media to narrow the pool of competitors to the top three recipes submitted from each region—East, West, Central and South. At a live shake-off at Hyperion Public in Silver Lake, CA, two skilled bartenders faithfully replicated the recipes, which used everything from green garbanzos, edible flowers, specialty ice and vibrant colors in bold array to complement the flavors of Broker's London Dry Gin, as well as showcase the creativity and playfulness of the cocktails' creators. Eight judges, including previous Broker's Bowler Cup finalists Chris Amirault and Gordon Alatorre, picked one winner from each region to send to Tales of the Cocktail this month, where each of the winning entries will have their moment of glory in the Broker's Gin tasting room on Friday, July 17, from 3pm to 5pm at the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans. Crowds will select the overall winner, but all four bartenders will be profiled in the September issue of THE TASTING PANEL. Check out the finalists and winning recipes on the following pages: This year's judging panel included a star lineup of industry pros (left to right): Franklin Bator Jr., General Manager at Hyperion Public; Michael Mantondi, Assistant Divison Manager, Southern Wine & Spirits; Olivia Barker, Assistant Brand Manager for Hood River Distillers; Andrew Grani, Key Account Manager for Hood River Distillers Southern California; Chris Amirault, GM at Harlowe and Beverage Director at Idle Hour; Anthony Dias Blue, Editor-in-Chief of THE TASTING PANEL and Gordon Alatorre, Bartender at The Chestnut Club. ◗ Winner Broker's Gin BREAKING THE MOLD with Broker's Gin
