Our industry as a whole has a great opportunity to mentor new tal- ent and educate new filmmakers about the impor tance of high quality standards and solid expertise." THREATS: "Piracy continues to be a major threat and will re- quire sustained effor ts to combat. Runaway production is still an issue, although it doesn't impact post as much." OUTLOOK 2010: "My outlook is positive and persevering." LUKE HARPER Owner Audio Altimeter Minneapolis (www.minneapolisrecordingstudio.com) Audio Altimeter specializes in audio post produc- tion, 5.1 surround mixing, sound design and voiceover recording. STRENGTHS: "The technology is certainly a strength, and not just audio technology. Things like Twitter are ex- tremely useable. As more and more people join, the potential is even bet- ter. For example, I had a bizarre sound effect that I needed for a project. I needed a ver y specific kind of bird that wasn't in my library. So, I Tweeted that and I had it within an hour or so. I have about five sound designers sitting on my Twit- ter and one of them had that exact bird. Just being able to interact with people like that is great. The interface between our technology and us is star ting to blur more and more over time. That lets us think less about how we are going to do something and more about actually doing it." WEAKNESSES: "Surprisingly, one weakness is when another audio place closes. I know I can't provide ever y ser vice to ever y- body every time, so I rely on farming things out to other audio fa- cilities. It's depressing to see them close. I don't think of other audio houses as competition, so it's sad to see talented people out of work. "Another weakness is when any company that is inexperienced Universal handled sound editorial, sound design and the mix for Watchmen. www.postmagazine.com December 2009 • Post 35 A U D I O
