80 { THE SOMM JOURNAL } JUNE/JULY 2015 For Provence rosé producer Château Matton, it's not only what's in the bottle that counts, it's the bottle itself. The famed fluted bottle used by producers in this celebrated region of rosé was, in fact, designed by Monique Farnet, daughter of Minuty's founder and mother of its current winemaker, François Matton. The family has been making Provence's quintessential refresher for the past 80 years just five kilometers from Saint-Tropez, and counts among its fan base yacht owners and beachgoers of the Côte d'Azur, who are drawn to the fresh, mineral style of rosé. Minuty has its roots in red winemaking. When founder Gabriel Farnet started Minuty back in 1936, he brought his expertise as a red winemaker from nearby Domaine de Châteauneuf in Vidauban to Gassin, in the middle of the Saint-Tropez peninsula. But in 1960, the demand for rosé began to take off, and today the production is 90% pink.
