city of angels BIKE SHARE SANTA MONICA Take back the streets S anta Monica is ideal for riding a bike, whether for pleasure, errands or simple trans- portation. Don't have one? Very soon that won't be an obstacle. With City Council's approval of a new bikeshare system last November, the city is rolling full speed ahead toward the late-2015 launch of Breeze, a 500-bicycle smart-bike sharing system. An anticipated 65–75 lender docks will be located in Santa Monica, with fi ve stations in Venice, and on-board computers will lock, unlock and track the bikes via GPS. The hope is that Breeze eventually will link up with an integrated regional system throughout greater Los Angeles. Keep an eye out in July for bright green bikes zipping around town as system testing gets underway in preparation for launch. WOMEN CAN BUILD Rosie the Riveter exhibit at Union Station A n exhibit of 15 photos by Pulitzer Prize-winner Deanne Fitzmaurice, along with historic photographs of WWII-era "Rosie the Riveter" manufacturing workers and stories of "modern Rosies," reveals the overlooked contributions of women working to build transportation, including trams, rail and buses. The modern Rosies work for global manufac- turing companies that have U.S. factories. "'Women Can Build' says it all: the powerful, beautiful women working in these factories can do anything they set their minds to," said Madeline Janis, Director of the Jobs to Move America coalition. "We hope to inspire more young girls to work in heavy manufacturing, and to encourage the 16 major employers in transit equipment manufacturing to provide more good jobs and equal opportunity to women." Currently women make just 74 cents for every dollar men make in the industry—mostly in clerical positions—and are overlooked for the desired middle-class building jobs. The exhibit launches at transportation hub Union Station, with expected moves to D.C. and hopefully NYC after it closes here June 19.
