Mary Tyler Moore, 1970-77 Like Mother, Like Son, 2001 Ordinary People, 1980 Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for the drama Ordinary People, a Tony Award for her performance in the Broadway production of Whose Life Is It Anyway?, numerous Emmys for her television work, three Golden Globes and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Along with success came adversity, including alcoholism, illness and the accidental death of her son. She ultimately focused her efforts on changing the world for the better, first as a role model for young women at a time when there were far too few, and later with her philanthropic work. Moore has dedicated her efforts to fighting type I diabetes, and she knows well the difficulties of living with the disease. She was diagnosed while working on The Dick Van Dyke Show, and was slow to adjust to a new life of regulated diets and insulin shots. Those experiences prepared her for her role as the international chairman of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, using her star power to educate people about the disease and lobbying Congress to increase federal funding for research. Screen Actors Guild President Ken Howard summed up Moore's multifaceted appeal: "Mary Tyler Moore won our hearts as Laura Petrie and Mary Richards, our respect as her production company became synonymous with quality television, our awe as she tackled difficult subject matter in film and SAG.org on Broadway, and our admiration as she turned her public recognition into a catalyst to draw attention to critical and deeply personal health and social issues. She truly embodies the spirit behind SAG's Life Achievement Award, and we are honored to proclaim her as its 48th recipient."
