may 2015  /  the tasting panel  /  109 STEPHEN & PRUE HENSCHKE: Henschke (established 1868) is the proud holder of Hill of Grace, one of the world's oldest Shiraz vineyards. Hill of Grace was first created in 1958, and made every year except 1974 and 2000. Fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke and wife Prue regard themselves as stewards of the land as well as their winery's legacy. COLIN CAMPBELL: Campbells (established 1870) in Victoria has been producing fortified wines since 1870, and is known internationally for its Rutherglen, one of the world's most recognizable fortified wines originating from Australia. Fourth-generation winemaker Colin Campbell, wife Prue and their three daughters are continuing this winery's traditions. SCOTT MCWILLIAM: McWilliam's Wines (established 1877) of New South Wales has retained its leadership and relevance. Through its partnership with Maurice O'Shea, it established Mount Pleasant wines in 1932. Sixth-generation winemaker Scott McWilliam now leads the winery into the 21st century as Senior Winemaker. ROSS BROWN: Brown Brothers (established 1885) in Victoria's King Valley has 125+ years and four generations to its credit. Its iconic wines include its Shiraz, Mondeuse and Cabernet blend (first produced in 1954) and Noble Riesling. The winery is headed by Ross Brown, who completed a two-year rotation as chairman of Australia's First Families of Wine in 2012, and is an active member of its Executive Committee. CHESTER OSBORN: d'Arenberg (established 1912) is located in the McLaren Vale of South Australia. Fourth-generation winemaker Chester Osborn, who took the reins from his father in 1983, has forged a reputation for producing wines melding tradition and innovation. While d'Arenberg is known worldwide for its iconic The Dead Arm Shiraz, it also has notable historic releases including d'Arry's Original Shiraz/ Grenache (first released 1959). DARREN DE BORTOLI: De Bortoli Wines (established 1928) by Italian winemakers Vittorio and Giuseppina De Bortoli, is known for its Noble One Semillon, first released in 1982. The winery's success continues under third-generation winemaker Darren De Bortoli, who guided the family purchase of the Yarra Valley estate in 1987, and later forays into the King Valley in north eastern Victoria and the Hunter Valley in New South Wales. PETER BARRY: Jim Barry Wines (established 1959) in Clare, South Australia, soldiers into the 21st century under the leadership of the charismatic Peter Barry, son of the founder. He also helped develop and expand the company's vineyard sites and currently owns and operates six vineyards in the Clare and Coonawarra, totalling 550 acres. JUSTIN TAYLOR: Taylors/Wakefield (established 1969) in South Australia's Clare Valley, continues gaining momentum, domestically and internationally, through the effort of the three brothers in the family's third generation. Mitchell is its Managing Director and consulting winemaker. Clinton is the General Manager Winery Operations and Justin is the Export Manager.
