whole living "It's a very effi cient, fun, competitive workout that challenges the entire body," says Lisa Wheeler, Equinox's director of group fi tness development. "By alternating cardio rowing stations with strength training stations, upper body, lower body and core, you get a complete workout that is low impact yet high intensity." ShockWave, Equinox. www.equi- nox.com A nother low-impact hybrid is Yogalates, combining yoga and Pilates. Liz McDonald, who teaches privately, sees yoga and Pilates as "two sides of the same coin, complementary. Some people resonate with the mys- tical language of yoga; others need the more mechanical lan- guage of Pilates." Marna Currie became such a fan that she got certifi ed in Yo- galates two years ago. "After trying Pilates I felt great and stronger from the inside out; however, I missed the yoga room feel and savasana integration," Currie says. "When I found Yo- galates I fell in love." Yogalates has its critics, of course. "Some believe it dilutes yoga," Currie says, "but it changed my life." Yogalates, 3191 Casitas Ave., www.420yogala.com S hana Meyerson, a yoga pur- ist who owns YOGAthletica and Mini Yogis, Yoga for Kids, is not pleased with Yogalates or any of the other yoga fusions on the market. "The feeling is that as long as it gets to the masses, it's good," she laments. "I think that in the process, there's been an extraordinary and really quite tragic dilution of the practice. It's just commercialization on the broadest level that any- thing-plus-yoga is going to sell to the masses." Bambi Martin is undeterred, however, convinced the fusions are born of a demand from L.A. fi tness buffs. "It's a mecca of people wanting to be fi t," she says, "so it makes it easier to start a fi tness brand."
