Movers & Shakers How to Ask for Advice Getting career advice can be a challenging and intimidating task. Our biggest problems usually fall along the lines of not wanting to be a bother or not knowing how to start such conversations. Here are some solutions that will hopefully provide you with the tools you need to feel confident and get the ball rolling: NOT WANTING TO BE A BOTHER: Rule #1: People love talking about themselves and love giving advice. As long as you are being tactful in the way you are asking people to speak with you, it is never usually an imposition for them to answer questions or share their thoughts. Rule #2: Everybody loves food (unless they're weird). Asking to get lunch or to grab a cup of coffee is a perfect way to make someone smile and to create an excuse for conversation. KNOWING WHICH QUESTIONS TO ASK: Rule #3: You can't ask if you don't know, so be sure to identify your goals and objectives before asking for advice. Be as specific as possible, as this allows your mentor to be more direct. Rule #4: Be sure to ask for an opinion. Having years of experience provides an individual with wisdom and insight—so his or her professional perception of you can help you to devise a game plan that will make you your most marketable self.
