53 WINTER 2015 / CINEMONTAGE Sidebars are used to explain certain key concepts, add a historical footnote or offer a helpful tip. Those who want a deeper dive into the technology can even find data tables at the back of the book. Who should read Modern Post? "This book is intended for film professionals, educators and students alike," says Arundale. "While it is not meant to be a 'how-to' guide for the DIY filmmaker, it documents the best industry practices currently in place — the very latest technologies — and sheds light on emerging trends in digital filmmaking. Our goal is to demystify many of the underlying concepts and philosophies behind those topics so that the reader can apply them to future innovations." Arundale says the book also has a place on the professional's bookshelf. "More often than not, a producer, director or even working film editor may have questions that need answering," he says. "This book is the first desk reference that they should reach for." With its emphasis on both old and new, Modern Post would make a great addition to the reference tools of anyone who works in post. f We're Here, For You Healthcare / Wellness / Aid & Services Senior Care / Residential Retirement 855-760-MPTF (6783) www.mptf.com For over 90 years, MPTF has been helping Hollywood take care of its own. Nominations are taken in October at the general membership meeting and elections are held in December. There are over a dozen committees on which members can participate, whether or not they are Board members: Technology, National Training, Website, Membership Outreach and more. Check the website for a complete list; perhaps there may be one that interests you. You can learn more about the Board at www.editorsguild.com/runningtheguild. cfm. Supporting unionizing efforts is also important. When employees of a non-union shop decide to unionize, members close ranks behind them. Do you have contacts or information that might help build support for organizing at a non-union employer? Contact a Guild organizer. In the event of rallies or picket lines to show support for colleagues trying to win a contract, show up and demonstrate your solidarity. Stay abreast of organizing efforts at www.postproud.org. And finally, get out of your editing rooms and mix stages; get to know other members and talk amongst yourselves about how things are going on other shows. Post-production keeps us in different locations and isolated in small groups from other members. As you can see, there are a lot of benefits to being in the Guild, the most significant of which is the strength we derive from one another. Together, we can accomplish more than any of us can alone. But doing so requires both educating yourself about the available union opportunities and working with colleagues to make our union stronger still.
