{ SOMMjournal.com }  61 France is roughly shaped like a five-point star and Provence is a tip of the southeastern spur. It spans 120 miles, gently arcing past the 7th-century B.C. town of Arles down Le Grand Rhône and east around the coastline from Marseille to Toulon before turning into the mountains just west of Cannes. Inland, it wends east to west over a patchwork of terroirs and geological features including the red-hued Massif de l'Estérel, the stark white lime- stone ridge of Montagne Sainte-Victoire and the Alpilles, a small range jutting out of the Southern Rhône valley between AOCs Costères de Nîmes and Luberon. It's from here that the infamous Mistral—wind—rushes down the mountains, clarifying the air and removing humidity. Between this nourishing wind, poor soils and ceaseless sun (2800+ hours per year), vines are protected naturally and require very little intervention. As Rosé Rises In Prominence, PROVENCE IS ON FIRE Advanced sommelier Devin Zendel, of db Brasserie in Las Vegas, at Clos Cibonne Côtes de Provence Cru Classé. Sommelier Matthew Wirtala, of Bellagio in Las Vegas, takes some visual notes. Sommelier Cindy Woodman, of Café Boulud in Palm Beach, enjoys the sun in Saint-Tropez. Sommelier Jordan Egan, of The NoMad in NYC, explores a vineyard. 500 2000 2000 2000 2000 2000 2000 4000 2000 500 500 500 500 500 500 500 Avignon Carpentras Cavaillon Martigues Istres Salon-de- Provence Marseille Aix-en-Provence Hyères Aubagne Manosque Pertius Apt Roquevaire Brignoles Fréjus Vidauban Mandelieu- La Napoule Draguignan Toulon Lac de Ste.
