art & soul BOOKS Face Reading for Love Understand yourself, your partner, your date, or your lover! By Guy Finley W ith close to 40 book titles to his credit and 200,000 email subscribers, Guy Finley could easily be rest- ing on his laurels, however the man is on a mission. He is gently driven to help each and every one of us to full self-realization. Finley hasn't always been an author, just since he retired in 1979 from a successful nine-year career as a popular music com- poser. Now he's the director of the Oregon-based Life of Learn- ing Foundation and works consistently to share the peace he's found in living a spiritually based life close to nature. You won't fi nd anything shocking or revelatory in his newest book, just steady, inspiring wisdom and practical, often entertaining in- sights. With more than 80 stories, lessons and reminiscences from his own life, he is like a pied piper leading us away from whatever is holding us back and into our eternal, light-fi lled true essence. Want to be a happier, more fulfi lled person? Here's a good place to start. (Llewellyn Publications) —Abigail Lewis By Debra Jeane Houle I n Face Reading for Love, Debra Jeane Houle applies her background in traditional Chinese medicine to the fi eld of face reading. With the premise that form follows function, Houle shows how each facial feature has meaning and reveals challenges as well as gifts. Houle's book is well structured as a guide and can be used as such, allowing readers to skip to the sections they fi nd most relevant. She offers her own illustrations as a visual to complement her descriptions, although photos may have been even more useful. Because Houle's interpretations of features are quite literal in their correspondence to function, it is a simple system that could prove valuable in reading romantic prospects, in business, and in everyday interactions. The accuracy of her system is left in the reader's hands. (Dog Ear Publishing) —Erica Lynn The Secret of Your Immortal Self Key Lessons for Realizing the Divinity Within By Catherine Auman D o you have times during your day when you just need a little pick-me-up? Instances when a few words that cut right to the chase would help you stop to take a breath or refl ect for a moment? Catherine Auman's Shortcuts to Mind- fulness could be just what you're looking for. A licensed marriage and family therapist, Auman compiled her book from several sources—Everyday Ecstasy posts she wrote as a regular columnist for the website Sex.com, teaching stories she uses in her private practice, and other articles she's written. At last count, her online posts had been read by more than 14,000 readers. Auman's fl ashes of insight are sometimes thought-provoking short blasts, at others insightful re- minders. Her experience as a ther- apist gives her a rational perspec- tive, but it's tempered with spiritual insights, emotional awareness and sometimes-offbeat obser- vations. Subjects include, for example, why we should stop fo- cusing on self-esteem, why liking some activities is irrelevant to doing them, and ignoring common wisdom that you need to love yourself before you can love a partner. Even if you don't always agree with Auman's conclusions, you will appreciate her causing you to think about things from a new, sometimes unexpected perspective.
