fights, but we did take into account that the film is primarily a comedy — that's more of a determining factor for us than the fact that the film is animated. There are generally moments of some peril, so we treated the swords like real lethal swords. We tried to keep it in the sound vocabulary of a live- action movie, avoiding the big broad sounds." POST: What about the environments the characters live in? KING: "We tried to make the spaces the characters inhabit feel real, and each has a unique feeling… cave-like, wet or dusty. There are a lot of locations in the film and we try to make each of those sound distinct. There is one in particular that is a fairy tale- type location where everything sounds a little different." POST: Was there one scene that was par- ticularly challenging? KING: "One really difficult sound was when the characters walk on clouds. You sink into the clouds, but there does appear to be some support there — like deep sand. Trying to find the sound for what clouds sounds like was an interesting and convoluted search. We tried shaving cream and flour, cloth, pil- lows, blankets, and eventually John Roesch, our Foley artist, manipulated some cloth and came up with something really good. "There is also a giant goose that appears as a central character in the film. She needed to have a vocabulary and a range of motion and expressions, from being a frightening monster to being a caring mother — there is a whole goose subplot in the film — so we recorded a lot of geese as well. Even though we manipulated the sounds quite a bit, it's very helpful to start with recordings that will give me the source material performed or executed in the way I need.
