14  /  the tasting panel  /  december 2014 S outhern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc., had 30 million good reasons to visit Jeremiah Academy in Miami in late October. And students there had just as many reasons to cheer during their morning assembly, where company leaders delivered good news for thousands of K-12 students in Florida. The excite- ment was sparked by the $30 million check Southern's Chairman Harvey R. Chaplin and President & CEO Wayne E. Chaplin presented at the school—represent- ing the company's 2014 commitment to the Step Up For Students Scholarship program across the state of Florida. "As an important part of Southern's philanthropic efforts, we continually give back to our local communi- ties to ensure that tomorrow's future leaders—that's all of you—receive a great education," Harvey R. Chaplin said to the students. "Education is the building block to a successful future, which is why we've partnered with Step Up For Students for the past five years," added Wayne E. Chaplin. Southern joined the Step Up program as a corporate donor in 2010 and has contributed a total of $90 million since, including the recent pledge funding more than 5,500 scholarships for this school year. Southern's $30 million contribution this year is the largest one-time contribution in the program's history. Step Up For Students administers the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program, which provides scholarships to qualified families throughout Florida. Brief Encounters Whether THE TASTING PANEL goes to the brand execs or the brands call us, there is an abundance of news to report, from the latest releases to behind-the-scenes experiences with some of the world's most influential importers, winemakers, distillers . . . well, you name it. We may not have enough pages in each issue to devote as much attention as we would like to each person whose path we cross, but please note that if it's in the publication, we deem it noteworthy. —Meridith May, Publisher & Editorial Director THE MESSAGE 14  /  the tasting panel  /  december 2014
