Smith Micro ships low-cost animation apps LISO VIEJO, CA — Smith Micro’s (www.smithmicro.com) new Anime Studio Pro 8 is an all-in-one solution that enables artists to bring their Eden FXsupplies VFX for MTV’s ANTA MONICA — Eden FX (www.edenfx.com) is responsible for the visual effects featured in the new MTV dramatic series Teen Wolf.VFX supervisor John Gross and the team at Eden FX are creating a variety of vi- sual effects for the show, ranging from simple wire removals and eye glows, to matte paintings, transformations and full CGI character creation. For the pilot, Eden FX created VFX for a scene in which the Scott Mc- Call character (Tyler Posey) stumbles into a forest. A deer stampede fol- lows, and one deer crashes to the ground near the live-action character. The deer were modeled and animated using NewTek’s LightWave 3D. Final compositing was via After Effects CS3 and Eyeon Fusion 6.1. Tracking and wire removal was mostly through Imagineer’s Mocha Pro, as well as via After Effects and Fusion. Eden FX used Windows XP64 work- stations with 8-core Xeons and NVidia’s Quadro and GTX graphics card families for the pilot. Rendering was through its 80-node/160-processor renderfarm, running the proprietary render control system, Red Five. work to life.The release expands the tool’s animation capabilities with new automatic image tracing tools, its Realtime Media Connection and Global Rendering Styles.Anime Studio Pro 8 is a Mac and PC app designed for cre- ating animation in 2D, cartoon and cut-out styles. Artists can create characters, objects and scenes using vector-based drawing tools.They can also import scanned drawings and images, including layered Photoshop files. Automatic image tracing can speed up productions by automatically converting existing artwork and sketches to fully editable vector drawings.The Character Wizard allows users to design fully-rigged characters with multiple views, walk cycles and expressions. Real Time Media Connection allows imported media files edited in their native apps to be automatically recognized and updated within Anime Studio. Global Rendering Styles can quickly change the overall design of anima- tions by choosing from various fill, stroke and layer presets.The release is priced at $199.99, and current Anime Studio users can upgrade to Anime Studio Pro 8 for $129.99. Smith Micro also released Anime Studio Debut 8, a simple-to-use pro- gram that allows novice users to produce high-quality animations with little instruction.The app includes an Automatic Image Tracing feature that con- verts drawings into ready-to-animate vector art.
