Built on the high-performance Linux kernel, it's the compa- ny's most advanced shared storage platform, delivering higher stream counts, higher total throughput and smoother operation. New features include a new Quality of Service/Bandwidth Reservation system that ensures that realtime activities such as video ingest and playback, including "digital cuts" and "print to video," always receive high prior- ity. The EditShare Connect interface has been redesigned, off ering a number of new features, including a "Project Profi les" feature that allows users to construct customer-based profi les that facilitate the speedy mounting of just the media and shared project spaces required for a particular assignment. Users can also now store FCP X "Libraries," "Events" and "Projects" on AFP-mounted network storage volumes. MACKIE MONITORS IMPROVE DESKTOP EXPERIENCE WOODINVILLE, WA — Mackie (http://cr.mackie. com) has introduced a new desktop-friendly, compact monitor line. The Creative Reference Multimedia Monitor Series includes two models — the CR3 and CR4 — with three-inch or four- inch woofers that provide a deep, punchy low- end. The monitors' 3/4-inch silk-dome tweeters deliver smooth, articulate highs. The front panel includes an on/off /volume knob with a power indication ring. The monitors come with connecting cables and acoustic isolation pads. They are sold in pairs for $129.99 and $199.99. ATTO TECHNOLOGY EXPANDS CERTIFICATIONS WITH NETAPP AMHERST, NY — Atto Technology (attotech.com) is expanding its portfolio of connectivity options for NetApp storage and data management solu- tions with the Celerity 8Gb and Gen 5 powered 16Gb Host Bus Adapters and ThunderLink 1082 Desklink device. Enterprises and users in high per- formance markets — such as media & entertain- ment — are challenged by the increased amount of data sets and require solutions to quickly retrieve, analyze and process information. The combination of Atto's high-performance connectivity, cou- pled with NetApp E-Series and EF-Series storage systems, which deliver up to 12GB/s of sustained bandwidth and over 400K IOPS at submillisecond latency, helps meet those requirements. Pairing NetApp's EF-Series all-fl ash arrays and E-Series platforms with Atto's Celerity HBAs can create dense, performance-oriented architectures that are reliable and scalable. CONVERGENT DELIVERS AFFORDABLE ON-BOARD MONITOR/RECORDER COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — Convergent Design's (www.convergent-design.com) Odyssey7 is the little sister to the company's Odyssey7Q. The pro HD monitor/recorder ($1,295) will ship this month and features a 1280x800 OLED touchscreen with true blacks and accurate colors. Monitor functions include advanced image analysis tools for expo- sure and focus, such as waveform, histogram, false color, focus assist and pixel zoom. As a recorder, the Odyssey7 captures video in Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) at 1080/30p, 1080/60i or 720/60p. Future updates will expand the available frame rates as well as add other formats. An SSD slot accepts a Convergent Design Odyssey SSD, which is available in 256GB and 512GB capacities. A 512GB SSD will hold 330 minutes of 1080/24p material. The Odyssey7 off ers fi le scrubbing during playback. In addition, signals are cross-converted and output as SDI and HDMI simultaneously. SIDE EFFECTS RELEASES HOUDINI ENGINE FOR AUTODESK MAYA TORONTO — Side Eff ects Software (www.sidefx. com) has released the Houdini Engine plug-in for Maya, providing animation and game studios with deep integration of Houdini's procedural technology into Maya scenes and pipelines. The Houdini Engine brings Houdini's procedur- al workfl ow inside Maya. Houdini assets can then be created by artists and technical directors using geometry, particles, FLIP fl uids, Pyro FX, volumes and fi nite elements, that are then handed off to Maya artists. Side Eff ects is also planning to release Houdini Engine plug-ins for 3DS Max and Unreal in late 2014 as well as Cinema 4D and Unity. Houdini Engine for Maya is now available on OS X, Windows and Linux using the same installer as Houdini. The Unity plug-in is available for experi- mental testing and the planned plug-ins for Cinema 4D, 3DS Max and Unreal will be released for testing by late summer. Artists with Houdini or Houdini FX licenses can run the Houdini Engine using their existing licenses. Artists who only need to work in Maya can use a dedicated Houdini Engine license, which comes with a 15-day free trial. A workstation licenses is $499. Floating and volume pricing is available too.
