New Media The new media landscape is extensive, and whether it’s a Web series, podcasts for corporate communications, mixed-media presentations or Internet games, new media content requires high-quality audio, music and sound design to help make the experience memorable. WEB SERIES When the long-running daytime drama The Guiding Light was cancelled, star Crystal Chappell wanted to find a way to continue the show’s Otalia storyline for the character’s considerable fan base. So Venice The Series launched online for subscribers in the fall of 2009 (www.venicethe- series.com); while not a spinoff of The Guiding Light, the Venice Beach-based show satisfies fans who were jonesing for the actors and the juicy plot- lines they enjoyed on the soap. Lane Crouse (www.lanecrouse.com), now a sound designer with Turner Studios in Atlanta, signed on as sound editor for the online series’ first season and then assumed sound designer duties as well. The second season’s 12 episodes, which doubled in length to 10-20 minutes each,“became more reliant on music and a little heavier sound design,” he notes,“although music and sound design take a backseat to dialogue in a drama series.” www.postmagazine.com May 2011 • Post 31
