Brief Encounters: International Edition THE TASTING PANEL works hard to bring you the faces and places behind the brands in our Brief Encounters section every month, but after seeing so many of our favorite brands snag the spotlight at international expo extraordinaire ProWein 2011, we knew a transnational edition was needed. Here are some of our favorite faces and new friends from ProWein. For more photos, check out our Facebook page! Famed hat house Stetson made its inter- national debut into the spirits realm at ProWein. CEO Pamela Fields enjoys a Manhattan made with Stetson Bourbon, slated to roll out in the U.S. later this year. Stay tuned to THE TASTING PANEL for more info on the newest brand to throw its hat (pun certainly intended) into the ring. Education was an important aspect at ProWein. From seminars and panels, to tastings at individual suites, producers had the opportunity to connect directly with buyers. Jerry Comfort, Manager of Wine Education for Treasury Wine Estates, led buyers through a vertical tasting of Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, starting with vintages from 1977. Bowler hats were all the rage at ProWein, where brothers and Broker’s Gin Directors Andy and Martin Dawson tasted expo- goers on not only super-premium Broker’s, but on the brand’s signature cocktail, and raison d’être, a Gin and Tonic. Here, Andy pours one for THE TASTING PANEL. California chefs with German connections offered food and wine pairings that embody the region for international visitors. Here, Chefs Daniel Isberg (left) and Thomas Schmidt of the Vintner’s Inn in Sonoma offer up pan-seared scallops with cheddar cauliflower mash and chili butter, paired with the Concannon 2009 Conservancy Chard. “California cuisine is about local, fresh and organic products, and we’re trying to demonstrate that here today,” said Isberg. Antonio Silva, Director of Export at Dry Creek Vineyard (left) and Michael Hartmann, Director of Sales and Marketing at Lucas & Lewellen, were impressed with the international scope of the expo. “It’s the whole world of wine here!” remarked Hartmann. may 201 1 / the tasting panel / 75
