March 2014 isea.org • ISEA Communiqué 10 LOCAL the des Moines education Association, in partnership with the iSeA, everbody wins! iowa, Smilemakers, and Merle hay Mall, hosted a Read Across America event on Monday, March 3 celebrating beloved author, dr. Seuss on his birthday. the event marks dMeA's fifth dr. Seuss birthday celebration at Merle hay Mall, an annual event which attracts hundreds of area students. A free book giveaway, free cookies, games, a costume contest with prizes, and special appearances from cat-in-the-hat and iowa energy's mascot, Surge, combined to make the event a success as kids of every age celebrated their love of all things Seussical, and their enthusiasm for reading. "dMeA has hosted this event with our partners for years, and have watched it grow in the community. As educators, we are so happy to be able to share our love of reading and are grateful to the many members who volunteer their time and energy to make it all happen. not only is it a wonderful way to celebrate a great author, but it's an exceptional way to express our support and appreciation to the community in which we work and live," said dMeA president Andrew Rassmussen. "this event is about developing a love of reading which our educators do every day!" said iSeA president tammy wawro. "wherever students want to go, good reading skills can help make the journey easier and fun. because this event helps make reading fun, students want to be in the company of good books—again and again, " added wawro. originally created by the national education Association and dr. Seuss enterprises, l.p., as a one-day event on dr. Seuss's March 2nd birthday, the neA's Read Across America has grown into a nationwide program that promotes reading with f-u-n activities. this year, with March 2 falling on a Sunday, the 17th neA's Read Across America day was celebrated March 3 in des Moines and in other cities around the state.
