Retailers
P
atrons of Dodd's Liquor City
in Millwood, New York, usu-
ally recommend the wine store
with a warning: Enter with your arms
to your sides and prepare to walk side-
ways. This 35-year-old store is well-
known throughout Westchester Coun-
ty for its well-stocked floor of wines
from around the world. The small
shop, tucked into a nondescript shop-
ping center, nearly bursts horizontally
and vertically with bottles, with all the
intrigue of a great library full of undis-
covered books.
In this case, the librarian is Dodd Farber, a
quick-talking, no-nonsense kind of guy with
a wealth of wine knowledge and opinions,
and no reticence about passing them along.
"People come here knowing nothing about
wine—it's a loose situation," says Farber.
"We like wine, we know wine, so we get
them to try what we like." He adds, "The
whole business is really a hand-sell these
days, but over the years we've developed a
lot of credibility."
