A Long History The 43 Mini Beer makes a great introduction to vanilla-citrus liqueur LICOR 43, the most recognized international Spanish liqueur and one with an ever-growing presence here in the States, thanks to U.S. importer Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits. As one of Europe's grand liqueurs, LICOR 43 has a rich history. Made in Cartagena, a Mediterranean city on Spain's southern coast that was founded by the Carthaginians, LICOR 43 can be traced back to an ancient formula—one of many rich elixirs once concocted there—for a licor mirabilis, or "miracle drink," said by locals to offer longevity. The Romans, who conquered the city in 209 B.C., prohibited the manufacture of the "suspicious" elixir and ordered the destruction of the production facilities. Not to fear: LICOR 43 is still being produced in Cartagena, by Diego Zamora S.A., a company founded in 1924 by entrepreneur siblings Angel and Diego Zamora, sister Josefina Zamora and her husband Emilio Restoy Godoy. (The mugs are available through your sales rep.) ◗ Squeeze the cream from a squeeze bottle against the side of the mug, or pour the heavy cream over the back of a spoon so that it floats on top of the LICOR 43. ◗ For best results, make sure that both the LICOR 43 and the cream are well chilled ahead of time. ◗ Use heavy whipping cream, available at any grocery or convenience store (do NOT use milk, half and half, light cream, whipped cream or cream-based cordials). ◗ Do not shake the LICOR 43 or the cream with ice; this dilutes the liquid, prevent- ing a good "float," and changes the taste. ◗ Serve within 2–3 minutes for best results. ship with Zamora on the wine side, Deutsch brought LICOR 43 into its portfolio in March 2012. Today, LICOR 43 is available in 50 markets across the United States and in 60 countries—and growing—worldwide. According to Tom Steffanci, President of Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits, the timing couldn't be better for the 43 Mini Beer. "The shot market is growing and it's much more dynamic than it used to be," Steffanci says. "The days of bad tasting shots as a badge of honor are a thing of the past. Now more than ever consumers are looking for something that actually tastes good." Secret Recipe, Seductive Taste The name LICOR 43 is derived from the original 43 ingredients in the recipe—passed down for genera- 80  /  the tasting panel  /  december 2013 TP1213_064-103.indd 80 11/23/13 8:35 PM
