PHOTO: MICHAEL PARMELEE PHOTOGRAPHY Headroom and Jerry Plotkin audio posted these spots for Select Sector SPDRs and Target. We can produce almost anything imaginable, in an incredibly short period of time. The field is broader than ever in terms of stretching limits and making incredible things happen.” WEAKNESSES: “The weaknesses in the industry are naturally endemic to ‘post.’ Post as in ‘after the fact.’So much time and money is spent before the job even gets here, the final link in the chain may not get the attention it deserves. It’s funny, because we’ve often been told that the mix —or sound design, or last-minute music de- cision, or even something as simple as the re-pacing of a voiceover — has actually saved a spot.As much as we love working fast, we also love having enough time to really get deep into a project.” OPPORTUNITIES:“On a technical and creative level, the exchange of files, or even realtime, long-distance collaboration, broadens the pos- sibilities immensely. We collaborate with other studios, composers,mu- sicians, editors and creatives from all over the world. The marketplace for sound has shifted and broadened.TV, radio and film are the anchors of our business, but Web/interactive is growing steadily, for us personally. We also love working with Web design companies like B-Reel, that allow us to be really creative, clever and inventive.” THREATS: “The effects of the recession are felt strongly in our industry. Agencies get squeezed by their clients and in turn vendors get squeezed by the agencies. Since audio post is the last stop be- fore broadcast,we feel the most pressure. Many agencies and edito- rial facilities have gone in-house. Sometimes simply in-box! Our ap- proach to competing with the trend is to constantly offer more than one can get ‘at home.’With operating costs rising, it’s a difficult task, but so far, for us, it’s a successful strategy.” OUTLOOK ON 2011:“We’re actually very optimistic about the year ahead. We’ve recently invested in our infrastructure in anticipa- tion of growth. We’re always excited about new ideas, new business and maybe even a few surprises — for all of us!” CAMERON FRANKLEY Supervising Sound Editor/Sound Designer Warner Bros. www.wbpostproduction.com Burbank The award-winning Cameron Frankley has credits such as Terminator Salvation, Due Date and the upcoming Hangover 2. STRENGTHS: “The strength of our industry is, and always has been, based on the people that participate in it.The artistic vision, imagination and the desire to embrace new technology are all re- WEAKNESSES: “Another union or guild strike would result in a weakness for the industry. Many people are still recovering from the last strike, and another one could be devastating to production and the people who rely on it.Another concern is the uncertainty in the capital market. Financial structures are changing, and we need that stability to preserve strength in production. In summary, with some money and good contracts,we can make some movies!” OPPORTUNITIES: “The most exciting thing about our work is that we are forever learning. The creativity is limitless. We continue www.postmagazine.com Warner Bros.’ Cameron Frankley recently lent his talents to Due Date. sponsible for moving the craft to a new level daily.Technically,we are growing at a tremendous rate. Our ability to evolve and embrace the future with the participation of our entire community is the key to our strength as an industry. “We currently have a post production community that operates at a very high level because of the support from producers and fa- cility operators.Without that support, we are in jeopardy of not keeping up with opportunities and fulfilling the quality demands that all top creative filmmakers require. “In general, production is strong. There is a significant amount of films in production. The industry labor contracts (WGA, DGA, AFTRA, SAG) seem to be stable at the moment, and the box office is very robust.” December 2010 • Post 43 AUDIO
