AROUND AEA Equipping the New Generation of Teachers As the school year started, many new teachers entered the classroom for the first time. To help new teachers get a great start to the year and their career, AEA Educators Soaring With Aspiring Goals (eSWAG) hosted the first ever Educator Bazaar on August 3, 2013. eSWAG organized the bazaar with the goal of supporting teachers just starting out and making them feel welcome into the profession and their new school. "We wanted new teachers to go into their classroom without any worries about money and how they would find supplies for their classroom," said eSWAG member Liz Leivas. "We wanted to remove that barrier so that new teachers could focus on instruction." Over 150 new teachers attended the daylong event, which included professional development workshops covering topics such as classroom management and student loan forgiveness. Afterwards new teachers were invited to get free classroom supplies at the bazaar. Winter.13advo.indd 9 The supplies were donated by teachers and community members from across the state to help equip new teachers. There was food, music, and impromptu dance parties as participants socialized and collected materials for their classrooms. "My classroom is all taken care of now," said Roosevelt EA member Maria Navarro. "These supplies are helpful and I learned a lot during the student loan presentation that is going to save me money." This event is a great example of teachers supporting teachers and AEA supporting the next generation of teachers to be successful in their careers.
