WHAT IS BEING SAID ABOUT… Common Core Standards This past summer NEA conducted a poll of members AWARENESS to gauge teacher awareness and opinions of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). "The new standards are a game-changer for the students in our nation's public school system," said NEA President Dennis Van Roekel. "Our members embrace the Common Core State Standards' promise – that all students will have the opportunity to learn the skills they need to succeed, regardless of where they live." 98% 71% of teachers have heard about the standards have heard a great deal WHAT TEACHERS NEED Teachers cite what they need most to successfully teach the new standards: • Collaboration time with colleagues (72%) • More planning time (70%) However, few were optimistic about getting what they actually need in order to prepare. For example, two-thirds of members have participated in trainings around CCSS, but just 26% said the trainings were helpful. Winter.13advo.indd 40 "In order to fulfill the standards' worthy goals we need an equal commitment to common sense implementation," Van Roekel added. "We owe it to our students to provide teachers with the time, tools, and resources to get it right." WHAT STUDENTS NEED NEA members are clear about what their students need in order to successfully learn the new curriculum: • Smaller class sizes (43%) • More time to learn prior to assessments (22%) • Up-to-date classroom learning aids, including text books and computers (32%).
