EditShare's Ultra targets HD & SD editorial B Sony Music Ent. UK relies on TerraBlock H UDSON, MA — Sony Music Entertainment UK's digital video production department is using Facilis' (http://facilis.com) TerraBlock shared storage system to store, review and manage assets for post production on several in-house projects. The projects range from music videos for Sony-represented artists to behind-the-scenes interviews and promotional content. Under the supervision of digital production manager Joe Wylie, the Sony team will collaborate on anywhere from 10 to 20 projects at any given time. Content will ultimately appear on the Web, television or consumer devices. The capture, review and management of assets is integral to the entire process, and the department has come to depend on its Facilis TerraBlock shared storage system to handle these tasks. TerraBlock is a high-capacity, multiplatform, shared storage system for post production and content creation. It supports Fiber Channel and Ethernet, and offers both volume- and filelevel control. "While shared storage may be invisible to the outside world; it's absolutely essential for us to keep track of all incoming and outgoing video materials," explains Wylie. "We use our TerraBlock everyday, and we've had a really great experience with it. We can easily turn on the system, use it and edit — even with massive files. It's reliable, stable and just works really well." TerraBlock is connected via Fibre Channel to three Mac clients and one PC client that run a variety of programs, including Apple Final Cut Pro 7 and X, Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere Pro and the Adobe Creative Suite. "In our line of work, a hybrid environment is a must, because we need to ASINGSTOKE, UK — EditShare (www.editshare.com) unveiled the newest addition to its family of shared storage solutions at IBC in Amsterdam last month. EditShare Ultra is an affordable shared storage solution that offers advanced project and media sharing for Avid, Adobe Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro and Lightworks editors. EditShare Ultra is based on the same architecture as the company's EditShare XStream, Energy and Field 2 solutions, and supports uncompressed SD or compressed HD video workflows over Gigabit Ethernet. "The attractive price point gives facilities on a tight budget a much better storage option than a generic NAS that, in many cases, will neither provide edit-in-place performance nor support a complete media and project sharing workflow," explains EditShare CEO and founder, Andy Liebman. "With Ultra, there is no sacrificing with regards to workflow or benefits. EditShare Ultra customers are given the same great project and media sharing capabilities found throughout the EditShare shared storage products, in a configuration that supports both their workflow and budget." Each Ultra shared storage system supports eight streams of ProRes 422 or DNxHD 145, or 24 streams of 25-Mbit video, such as DV25 or XDCAM-EX 25.The solution employs RAID5 protection. Using Ultra, users can make direct connections between workstations and the two on-board Gigabit Ethernet ports, or combine the bandwidth of the two Ethernet ports and connect them to a low-cost switch for additional client connectivity. EditShare Ultra runs on a Linux OS that has been optimized specifically for media workflows. Every Ultra system includes a single-seat license to use EditShare Flow media asset management software. With Flow, users can perform file ingest from digital cameras and P2 or XDCAM devices direct from a workstation into Ultra's storage, or use Flow Browse to log, annotate and search for clips. Configurations start below $10,000. The Ark invests in Quantum solutions L ONDON — The Ark Post Production (www.theark.uk.com) has implemented Quantum's (www.quantum.com) Lattus-M object storage and StorNext appliances to manage, share and preserve its volumes of digital assets, as well as to provide a seamless and efficient end-to-end media workflow.  Established in 2002, The Ark has two sites in SoHo that manage the duplication, conversion, encoding, transcoding and editing of digital media.      Faced with tightening production deadlines and growing amounts of media content to manage in various formats, including 2K, 4K, HD and SD, The Ark required a solution capable of handling a multi-petabyte archive of digital assets with self-healing and self-protecting capabilities, along with fast retrieval times. Additionally, content creators and video editors needed to be able to access and share content across a variety of editing and VFX applications, including Apple's Final Cut Pro and Avid Media Composer. The studio worked with technical experts at UK-based, Quantum-certified reseller CCK for product selection and installation. Lattus-M integrates next generation object storage technology with StorNext Storage Manager in a durable, scalable and efficient disk-based archive. It enables policy-based movement of content and rapid retrieval of archives at nearline speeds. Lattus-M also offers much greater durability than traditional RAID offerings. The StorNext M660 delivers the high-performance and flexibility of the StorNext File System in a pre-configured metadata appliance that enables collaboration across the entire workflow, from ingest to delivery and archive. Also implemented is the StorNext QD6000 disk array, which provides high-performance primary online storage that's optimized for StorNext environments. www.postmagazine.com Post • October 2013 31
