TEQUILA ALMA R ecently introduced into the U.S., Alma—Spanish for “soul”—is an ultra-premium tequila at a low-mid price point, and boasting a rich heritage that dates back to the beginning of the 19th century. The hand-molded towering rectangular bottles are topped off with natural wood caps and an off-center spout that makes for easy pouring. Made in batches and aged in Canadian oak. Our Panel Votes: “Alma Reposado wafts with cinnamon, toasted oak and cardamom spice. Smooth and balanced, a light vanilla and rounded agave flavor complete the palate.” (NR) “Alma Añejo proffers a sweet vanilla nose with earthy agave fruit. The palate is intense with sweet, supple power and hints of spice.” (KV) “Alma Silver’s perfumed nose gives way to a floral, fruity and stony palate. Feminine and graceful.” (MM) Xamay Importers; represented by Great Western Brokerage Joe Ross, VP sales for Alma Tequila TRES AGAVES F rom the Orendain family’s El Llano distillery in the town of Tequila, fifth-generation family members produce Tres Agaves tequila. “We are embracing a full-flavored, full-agave but approachable style,” says Eric Rubin of Tres Agave Products, which also produces Tres Agaves Agave Nectar (at 48 brix) from a recipe that originated at Tommy’s, San Francisco’s famed tequila bar. Our Panel Votes: “Tres Agaves Blanco has a pungent cucumber, lime and agave nose. On the front of the palate, it’s about the pepper bite that wakes you up, then proceeds to a nougat-like mocha and creamy center.” (MM) “The Blanco brings rose petals to mind, with a zest of lime peel, orange oil and spice. The palate is clean, bright and fresh with a penetrating finish.” (KV) “When I sip Tres Agaves Añejo, I think of dessert; it starts dry and leads to notes of dark chocolate [aged in Woodford Reserve barrels for 18 months].” (LL) Tres Agaves Products Eric Rubin of Tres Agaves Products. 88 / the tasting panel / november 2010
