Importantly, in Spider-Noir, many of our characters, including Nicolas Cage's Ben Reilly, were veterans of the war, so visually tying the Bugle into their experience seemed a perfect fit. A tribute to a tribute! (And specifically foreshadowing, for the war experience becomes more important as the series unfolds!) The writers provided us with the headlines and copy, fortunately. I've done a great many newspapers for movies and television, and the sad fact is many writers are too busy to meet the Art Department's deadlines with copy, so I've gotten pretty good at coughing up chunks of pertinent text in a hurry. I'm not asking for a writing credit. (Screenwriters of the world, you're welcome.) In the end, Graphic Designers Carly Sertic, Audrey Zaldumbide and I produced a total of ten printed Daily Bugles, plus an additional sixteen for a montage sequence, handfuls of inside pages, replete with story-point headlines, photos and supporting articles inspired by real headlines of each day. For the set of the Daily Bugle office, we added a collection of framed historic Daily Bugles created by Eric Rosenberg, dating back to New York's 1886 dedication of the Statue of Liberty. Through the magic of filmmaking, we have been privileged to visit the year 1933 with extreme detail and precision. A nation gripped with unemployment and rising prices as fascism beckoned and war began anew overseas. (Thankfully, now we can all happily return to blissful modern reality.) ADG D.
