for me was the carousel. The Art Department started dissecting the visuals from the game and began interpreting them into a live-action world. The carousel, which was not originally scripted and became the centerpiece of the main set, required several departments to come together to create and engineer the enormous prop. Sculpting, paint, fabrication, special effects, set lighting and stunts all had to work simultaneously to create this familiar, working set piece. "Because of its unique complexity, we constructed the carousel in various parts. From custom vacuum- formed details to the hand-carved character menagerie, along with the controllable LED modules designed and manufactured by the electrical department, everything was custom-made and installed onto an industrial lazy Susan constructed by our SFX team. This labor of love best represents the collective collaboration of our industry." Art Director Mark Terry This process would become the norm for the design and construction of all the main sets. Achieving the aesthetic we wanted while constantly having to redirect and amend our designs to accommodate requirements for puppeteers, creature restrictions, special effects and lighting without compromising our designs. All of this masterfully orchestrated by Mark Terry and the rest of the team. As in the first film, I wanted to design a set that was built as a combination of connected rooms, hallways and passageways. Only the music box room was built as a stand-alone set because of its complex mechanical effects, puppeteering and camera requirements. It is also geographically located as a subterranean room deep under the show stage of the pizzeria. The music box room, where the marionette is kept while waiting to rise up to the stage to perform for the eager children in the dining room, was an opportunity to take a departure from reality and create a space that would feel like we were back inside the game. Exaggerated and over the top, the music box room would feel like being A. CAROUSEL. SET PHOTO. B. CAROUSEL CHARACTERS IN SCULPTING AND PAINT. SET PHOTO. C. CAROUSEL IN PROGRESS. SET PHOTO. B A C
