Over a third had more than 20 AUDITIONS WHAT ARE YOU AUDITIONING FOR? 81.6% Entertainment 2.8% Other 15.6% Commercials A uditioning used to be relatively straightforward: Show up on time, be prepared and give your best performance. But ever since technology made possible self-tape and online auditions, these nontraditional methods of getting the job have been growing in frequency, to the point where they are now the norm. The pandemic, and the increased need for remote work turbo-charged this trend, and some members have struggled to keep up. Self-taping has come with its own set of complications: the need for equipment, a certain level of technical aptitude, tight turnaround times, asks for performances with excessive amounts of dialogue or in uncomfortable circumstances, and much more. Members have been rightfully concerned — and the union has been working to ensure members have the knowledge and resources they need — while also placing limits on what actors are being asked to do. In fact, the union negotiated strict self-tape audition regulations into the last Commercials Contract and the National Board affirmed page restrictions on self-taped auditions for low-budget productions, as well as forming a National Self-Tape Committee to coordinate the work being done to tackle this issue.
